On 4 November 2015, the Maldives’ Government declared a state of emergency citing national security concerns. This paper examines the background to recent political instability in the country, which has included the arrest and detention of former Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb in connection with an alleged assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen. Moreover, the paper examines the sentencing of former-President Mohammed Nasheed to thirteen years in jail in March 2015.

The US government has recently shifted its approach to Ukraine, engaging in direct negotiations with Russia regarding the conflict’s resolution, pursuing a minerals agreement with Ukraine, and temporarily halting military aid and intelligence sharing. During these developments, the UK government has reaffirmed its support for Ukraine through financial and military assistance, in addition to hosting a peace summit and committing further military aid.
